If you are an iPhone user then soon you may be deactivated by your telecom operator. This is because Apple is not agreeing to a new mandatory compliance regulation enforced by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The new regulation is primarily meant to curb pesky commercial calls and SMSes and telecom operators will have to follow this strictly.
Why is TRAI Angry?
Trai has just released the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation which aims to fight pesky calls and messages and allows subscribers to report directly. Apple hasn’t allowed Trai to release its DND 2.0 app on its App Store because it doesn’t allow third-party apps to get access to calls and SMSes.
What does Apple actually want?
Apple wants DND 2.0 to it follow Apple’s App store policy. While Google has agreed to allow the DND 2.0 app on its Play Store following the new mandate, Apple has denied. With this, the Trai has said that those phones that do not follow Trai’s norms and allow the DND 2.0 app to be downloaded by subscribers will be “derecognized”.
What will happen to your existing iPhones, if TRAI Bans?
Mobile numbers used by iPhones and Apple Watch may be deactivated.
If TRAI “ derecognizes” Apple iPhones or other iOS devices including Apple Watch 3 Cellular, then telecom operators will be forced to deactivate mobile numbers used by iPhones or Apple Watch 3 Cellular. In other words, buy a non-apple phone for mobile connectivity.
what is the Impact on iPhone Sales?
According to a Bloomberg report, this has “harmed the company’s efforts to sell more products in the country.”
